Dear Customers and Industry Colleagues,

Spring is in the air, even if that real “spring feeling” is still missing from the world economic situation. The first quarter of the year has gone well for Training Services, with a busy schedule of courses and good progress on new initiatives.

After running several courses using our new iPad training tool, we are building up solid experience of delivering training materials using this exciting technology. There is almost universal acceptance of the device, which offers enormous flexibility and an almost paperless concept.

In addition to introducing new technologies, we are continuing to focus on the practical issues that matter to you. This includes making improvements to courses such as our popular EWIS course, which you can read about below.

Industry challenges continue to affect us. An unexpected one is the new requirement for a detailed Training Needs Analysis, as set out in Commission Regulation (EU) No 1149/2011 of October 2011. Compliance with this requirement, as issued, would take many thousands of man-hours, but deliver few or no safety or other benefits to our customers, the industry, or ourselves. We are working with our industry colleagues and authorities to find a solution.

In a bold move designed to expose our apprentices to real business practices and processes, they now have their own business enterprise, which sells high-quality items produced in the apprentice training school. A new web outlet will soon be available to these young entrepreneurs.

Overcoming challenges with innovative, efficient and effective solutions that maintain our reputation for quality is a key part of our offering to you. As ever, we remain dedicated to service and support, and look forward to helping you solve your training issues. We hope that you’ll enjoy this issue of Perspectives, and that its contents will encourage you to contact us and share your thoughts.

With best regards,

Markus Bürgin
SR Technics iPad app receives positive feedback
Since the introduction of our iPad training courses, we have completed a series of Boeing and Airbus type courses using the new technology, and have received very positive feedback.

This response was from Etihad Airways Senior Vice President Technical, Werner Rothenbaecher: “We have found that using such technology allows for more efficient and effective training, and one of the major benefits of the iPad is that additional supporting materials are now included in the interactive manuals, such as images, videos, cockpit voice recordings and incident reports. This offers real added-value to our aircraft engineers by providing a richer learning experience from a single delivery point.”

The SR Technics app allows students to download training materials onto the iPad in advance of their course, giving them time to familiarize themselves with the materials and subjects to be covered. The app was first launched in January 2012, and has since gone through several revisions, each incorporating feedback and suggestions from students as well as instructors.

To preview our app simply download it from the App Store, click on “My Courses”, and enter the following:

Etihad Airways and SR Technics roll out iPad aircraft type training courses
Etihad Airways is one of the first airlines in the world to roll out aircraft type training courses using tablet technology. The airline is training its 200 licensed aircraft engineers with an iPad app developed by SR Technics.

EWIS training now available everywhere and anytime
SR Technics Training Services is happy to announce that we now offer Electrical Wiring Interconnection System Training (EWIS) as a Web Based Training (WBT) course. In addition to traditional classroom training, courses for all target groups 1 to 8 are now available online. This training method provides greater flexibility when it comes to course times and locations.

The most detailed EWIS courses (target groups 1 and 2) require hands-on practical training to support the previously taught theory. WBT does not eliminate the need for this practical training, which must still take place in a workshop environment. However, workshop time has been reduced to three days for target group 1, and two days for target group 2, which saves both time and money.

Training Needs Analysis demanded by European Commission Regulation
An unexpected challenge has been presented to EASA Part 147 Approved Training Organizations with the requirement for a detailed Training Needs Analysis (TNA) to be in place by August 1, 2013. This is a huge task for the training industry and the authorities that regulate it. For a large training organization with many courses on its Schedule of Approval, compliance by the due date will be an insurmountable task.

Prior to the issue of Regulation (EU) No 1149/2011, EASA Opinion 05/2009 advised that for existing courses, the TNA was only required when they were below the minimum duration specified in the (pending) new rule. Industry meetings were also advised of this opinion.

However, as the Regulation passed through the European Commission committee process, there was a change made by the Commission and agreed by member states. As a consequence, the TNA is now mandatory for all existing courses, with the applicable date being August 1, 2013.

Clearly, an industry solution is required. We are working with our colleagues in several forums, including the European Aviation Maintenance Training Committee, to try to find a way to deal with this situation. For more information please contact Daniel Hepfer at daniel.hepfer@srtechnics.com.
From ‘novelty shop’ to full-blown business
In addition to providing courses for external clients, Training Services is responsible for vocational training at SR Technics. Our approach in this area is as innovative and comprehensive as it is for our external clientele. Which is why, with the goal of promoting entrepreneurial thinking and behavior in a real, hands-on environment, the SR Technics “apprentice shop” is being transformed into a profit-making, student-run business under our guidance.

The new venture has been designed to generate a profit with which to fund events, projects, and purchases that will be used for vocational education.

The new ‘company’ will develop, produce and distribute student-
built handicrafts, with the initial offering based on its current product range.

All the products will be produced exclusively by the students in the training workshops and equipment manufacturing facilities, and sold to SR Technics employees at our company premises. Other interested parties will have access to these products via a new website coming soon. The apprentice shop will handle all its own logistics, accounts, ordering and other business matters. Vocational students will operate within the company for a set period of time during their training.

By April of this year, the selection of the initial office managers and company employees, as well as the name of the company, will have been completed. We expect the new business to be fully operational by August.
